Installation

You need an active Shopify store. ShipSmart works on all plans that support third-party carrier-calculated shipping. If you’re on Shopify Basic, you’ll need to enable carrier-calculated shipping in your plan settings first.

  1. Go to the ShipSmart listing in the Shopify App Store.
  2. Click Add app.
  3. Review the permissions and click Install app.

Shopify will redirect you to the ShipSmart dashboard inside your admin.

ShipSmart automatically kicks off a product sync when you install. It imports your product catalog so rules can match on vendor, product type and tags. The sync runs in the background. You can check its status and run it manually at any time from Settings > Product Sync.

This is the step that connects ShipSmart to your checkout. Without it, your rules exist in ShipSmart but Shopify won’t ask for rates.

  1. In ShipSmart, go to Settings.
  2. Click the Carrier Service tab.
  3. Click Register Carrier Service.

That’s it. ShipSmart creates a carrier service in your Shopify store called “ShipSmart Rates” and saves the connection. The status badge on that tab will turn green showing Active.

Shopify will now send a rate request to ShipSmart every time a customer reaches checkout.

After registering the carrier service, go back to the ShipSmart dashboard. The setup guide shows 4 steps. Carrier service should now show a green checkmark.

To confirm end-to-end, you can either:

  • Go through a test checkout on your store and look for rates labelled with your service names.
  • Use the Rate Simulator to run a test without touching your storefront.

If no rates appear at checkout, check that you have at least one active shipping rule. Rules must be active and their postcode zone must cover the destination postcode.

If you need to disconnect ShipSmart from checkout, go to Settings > Carrier Service and click Deregister. This removes the carrier service from your Shopify store. Your rules and zones are preserved, so you can re-register at any time.
